It's been awhile, I'm still around and here is a quick fishing report from today

Took a little break from blog, thanks for every one's patience. Been dealing with a very busy home life. Fly tying and fly fishing has taken a little bit of a back seat. Excited about the rest of the year and the new year.

Got the kitchen pass to hit the river. Took off to the South Platte at Decker's. While I was getting geared up had this red fox come up a watch.

Now lets talk about the fishing. the morning started out a little slow. Started out right below Decker's, flows where at 140cfs and the day was gorgeous.
Dropped down below Turnbull at around 11:00am and that was when things really heated up. 1/2 dozen fish in about 45min and it stayed steady for the next hour. I haven't been down that far in a while and I was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the fish was great, nothing under 16" was brought to the net. Quite a few fish at around 18"

The flies of the day was a sparkle wing RS-2 and Mercury Black Beauty in a size 18. The "D" rib golden stone nymph did pick up a couple fish.

Two new fly paterns added to the 2014 Montana Fly Company line up.

I'm excited to announce MFC picked up three new fly patterns for there 2014 catalog. They picked up the Rubber Leg D Rib Golden Stone Nymph in sizes 8 thru 12. This doesn't replace the standard D rib Golden Stone, It just adding rubber legs in the bigger sizes. The rubber legs just don't work to well in the smaller sizes. Then they also added the Stuffed Olive and the Stuffed Coffee. The Stuffed Olive and Stuffed Coffee have been excellent producers over the last two years, they have turned into one of my go to patterns. It was exciting to get two new patterns added in year that MFC did not add a lot of new patterns. More detailed info coming up on these patterns, stay tuned to this blog.

New Cableas Store

Me and my neighbor took a drive down to the new Cableas store in Lonetree, Co. The new store is beautiful, it is about 94,000 square feet of outdoor heaven.  The store opened a little over a week ago, the grand opening weekend was a circus. There was at times a 4 hour wait to get in the store on the grand opening weekend . After a week the shelves seamed fairly well stocked. So we get in the store and head back to fly shop to check it out. What do we find, a so called fly shop stuck back in the corner. I can tell you this our local fly shops have nothing to worry about, our local Bass Pro Shop has a better fly shop than the Cableas. Even our local Sportsmans Warehouse has a better fly shop than the Cableas. If you walked and blinked you could miss the fly tying section. Then we went looking for the fly bins, and too our surprise there was just a very small selection. The fly bins where shockingly small, I think Dick's Sporting goods has more fly bins then the Cableas. Then we started looking at there prices, I will just say this they are high. As a outdoor store it is great, the fly shop is a disappointment.

At the vise today

Every once in a while I get in the mood to tie up a classic. Well today that classic was a Muddler minnow with a twist. I really like tying the body with ultra wire. So hear are a couple pictures of the days work. A properly tied Muddler is a thing of beauty, these still have some work. For the most part I'm pleased with them.

New tying bench - Finest Fly Tying Benches of Colorado

Back in February I had the opportunity to meet Jay Burge with Finest Fly Tying Benches. After a short period of time in talking with Jay he offered me a spot on his prostaff. After doing some researcher I accepted his offer. His workman ship as a master carpenter is absolutely amazing. Then the fun started we sat down and designed a bench to fit my needs as a tier. I also wanted to make sure the bench worked well for shows and demos to be able show of his product. Another important feature I wanted was people watching me was to be able to see what I was doing. After a couple months in the design and production of the bench, here is what we came up with. This bench is truly one of a kind, and his workman ship did not disappoint. Here are a few pictures of the final product. I plan on doing a video tour of the bench also. I will be brining it out on this winter demo and show tour. Check it out and tell me what you think. Here is a link to his web site.

Finest Fly Tying Benches Of Colordao

Yesterday at West Denver TU tying clinic the owner of Finest Fly Tying Benches stopped by at sat down and talked. I have admired his wood working skills from afar. With me being in the interior trim business during the day I can spot top notch wood working when I see it. His fly tying benches are the real deal. Here is picture from his web site of one of his benches loaded up. Check out his website.
